Cell growth and cell death
Growth (+/-): netto result of proleferation and cell death

Proliferation

  • Increased numbers of cells ---- cell cycle

Cell death

  • Programmed cell death ---- Apoptosis
  • Spontaneously ----- Necrosis

Increase / decrease of tissue mass

Proliferation: - cell cycle

  • G1/G0-phase
  • S-phase
  • G2-phase
  • M-phase (mitosis)

Cell types:

Labile: Cells proliferate almost contineously (e.g. epithelial cells gastrointestinal tract, skin, bone marrow)

Stable: Cells leave temporarily the G0-phase (e.g. regeneration of liver parenchymal cells)

Permanent: Cells are permanently in the G0-phase and do not proliferate (e.g. braincells, cardiomyocytes)

cells

Cell death:

Apoptosis

  • Programmed cell death.(e.g. embryogenesis)

Necrosis

  • Spontaneous/non-physiological form of cell death. Cell membrane integrity is lost. Cell cytoplasm leeks out the cell.

Growth dynamics:

Tissue/cell culture system:

  • cell proliferation
  • followed by cell death (apoptosis)
